If you’re an aviation buff, plan a trip to one of the top museums dedicated to the spirit of adventure and technology in flying. Check out five of our favorites in the United States.

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum – Washington, D.C.

This museum houses the world’s largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft. It has more than 60,000 exhibits, including the Wright Brothers’ first airplane and the Apollo 11 command module that brought astronauts home after the first moon walk. You’ll also see Charles Lindbergh’s “Spirit of St. Louis,” the first plane to travel nonstop from New York to Paris.

Future of Flight Aviation Center and Boeing Tour – Mukilteo, Washington (near Seattle)

This museum provides a highly interactive experience. Try a simulator that puts you in the middle of the Battle of Iwo Jima and check out an exhibit that lets you design your own jet. You’ll also get to tour a huge Boeing assembly plant to see 747s, 777s, and 787 Dreamliners being built.

National Museum of the United States Air Force – near Dayton, Ohio

This military aviation museum features around 17 acres of indoor exhibits as well as additional outdoor displays. Check out the World War II-era B-17F Memphis Belle and the plane that was serving as Air Force One the day President John F. Kennedy was shot.

Pima Air & Space Museum – Tucson, Arizona

The largest non-government-funded aviation museum in the U.S. features 300 different types of aircraft. It houses the SR-71 Blackbird, which is the world’s fastest spy plane, as well as a B-29 Superfortress. It’s also home to “The Boneyard,” which includes more than 4,000 retired aircraft spread over 2,600 acres.

Pacific Aviation Museum – Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

This museum focuses on planes and artifacts from World War II, including the Japanese Zero fighter and the Aeronca 65TC, the first American plane that engaged in World War II combat.
