More people than ever are traveling with pets. Hotels, theme parks, restaurants, shopping destinations and recreational areas are all making accommodations for visitors who bring along the family dog or cat.
However, travelers themselves have responsibilities, too. These suggestions will make traveling more enjoyable for you and your pet:
- Make certain your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and in good health. A certificate from a veterinarian verifying your pet’s condition is required when traveling internationally. European Union countries actually require a passport for your pet as well.
- Have your pet checked and treated for fleas and ticks before departing. This precaution will benefit traveling humans too.
- Microchip your animal if you haven’t already done so. Searching for a lost pet on vacation is a definite buzz kill.
- Pack a lint roller to remove pet hair from rental car seats or hotel furniture.
- Research places that accept pets. Find a pet-friendly hotel or motel ahead of time, and make sure to obey the house rules after you check in. Same with restaurants or tourist activities. Make potty breaks more convenient by booking a room on the ground floor or near the elevator or stairs.
- Pack accordingly. Litter boxes, leashes, beds, food and water bowls or anything your pet requires at home - even a favorite chew toy - should come with you. This could mean packing a bag solely for pet items. Include pet food or be sure you can buy food that the pet will eat at your destination.
- Exercise your pet. Unfamiliar surroundings can be stressful to pets. If possible, walk dogs regularly to keep them calm.
Cirrus Aviation’s charter flights are popular with pet owners because pets are allowed to travel in the cabin, uncrated and comfortable. In some cases, a small cleaning deposit may be charged.
There is also no additional charge for luggage you may have to bring along for your pet.
