Quebec Offers a Fitting Stage
Held from November 17 to December 3, the Montreal Bach Festival is an expansive tribute to the German composer, who was born into a family of musicians in 1685 and lived until 1750 (during which time he sired 20 children).
The festival features more than 30 concerts staged by elite musicians as well as educational programs that pay homage to the music of Bach. And the backdrop is grand enough to suit the majesty of the theme: the cultural metropolis of Quebec, including the Quartier des Spectacles, Plateau Mont-Royal and Westmount.
Tickets are sold individually for each event of the festival, though you may not want to miss the official closing of the festival. It will feature Postlude, performed at the Maison Symphonique of Montreal. Be sure to make your selections before booking a luxurious private jet charter through Cirrus Aviation, which will transport you to the celebration in grand style.
Consider This Year's Highlights
Take a “dance” through the 2017 festival, which will feature some of the most influential interpreters of Bach. They include:
- Leipzig’s famous Boys Choir of the Church of St. Thomas, whose legacy dates back to 1212. The choir appeared at the festival in 2013 and returns for a highly anticipated encore at the Basilica Notre-Dame.
- British pianist Nick van Bloss, who is known for his fluid poetic style. He will perform the popular Goldberg Variations.
- German tenor Julius Prégardien, who will give two concerts.
- Several of the world’s leading choirs, including the Gramophone Award-winning Vox Luminis and Ensemble Jacques Moderne.
Festival Grew From a Vision
The robust character of the 2017 festival is owed in large part to the vision and tenacity of the founding artistic director, German-born musicologist Dr. Alexandra Scheibler.
She received her doctorate from the University of Hamburg but focused her dissertation on the the work of another musical genius: Leonard Bernstein. When she arrived in Montreal in 2003, she was chagrined to find not one performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio. In Hamburg, she could count at least 30. Thus began a crusade that resulted in the festival's 2005 debut, when it featured 10 concerts. Fittingly, the 2017 festival features the 30 concerts she so vividly recalls from her days in Hamburg.
“All the composers who succeeded Bach follow to some extent his compositional style and his ability to pair emotional connection with mathematical technique,” she says. “There is always a connection to Bach.”
